Mahano Institute

Rugari parish, Rutshuru territory — North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

A secondary school in the green

At Mahano Institute, a secondary school, the building is relatively modern. But it deteriorates quickly, for many reasons — the war among them.

What we found

The window panes were missing, damaged, or simply destroyed in the fighting.

In this region temperatures can drop to 5 °C. On a windy day it becomes very hard to do anything at all in rooms that are effectively open to the air.

What we did

Amani-Kwetu funded the repair of the windows. Learning can now take place in better conditions.

The association also covered a full year of school fees for thirty pupils.

Do you have photographs of Mahano?

The images from this project were lost. If you took part in the work at Rugari and kept any photographs, they would complete this page — and the memory of the association.
